As one of the leading companies in the industry, PHILIPS has been focusing on technology innovation for over 130 years. The newly found innovation center in Suzhou will help the brand understand the Chinese market better. YSP studied the brand value, including technology innovation, circular economy, the wellness and wellbeing. We try to create an office environment that helps employees enjoy and elevate their work performance.
The innovation process relies on highly efficient communication, as well as time for quality focus time. Despite the comprehensive lab requirements, employees need a “portal” that allows for an easy transition between focus and high collaboration zones. We split the floor into two types of programmatic spaces: The portal and the zones. We studied connection strategies for both types of programmatic spaces to provide a diverse working environment.
Psychologically, we understand the need for both open and sheltered areas. We explore this phenomenon of sense of security through the interplay of concave and convex spaces. We bring this theory into our design and embedded them with certain functions. We designed the space as connections of open and sheltered area, along with active and quiet space, to create a responsive environment for the employees.
THE PORTAL
1.1
We define the portal as open collaborative area. Emphasizing the transition of spaces, the portal is distinguished by a metal entrance. The overall look and feel is warm. This material selection also helps to tell the story of warmth generated by techonogy. We create the visual connection to direct the user through the portal.THE ZONE

We define “zones” as high efficiency work areas, including open workstation, enclosed conference room, and other focus areas. These “zones are organized with use of a grid to improve the efficiency. In addition to the warmth brought by wood materiality, the repetition of elements within the grid system helps create a visually appealing aesthetic.THE PORTAL ACROSS THE ZONE

The high density areas are frequently active and helps with information exchange. An agile work environment is the key to improve communication efficiency. We design the portals across zones to facilitate the best work environment for employees at PHILIPS Suzhou innovation center.
